DCA Strategy: Complete guide to accumulating cryptocurrencies
How to use DCA correctly, optimal intervals and investment sizes
Mastering DCA Strategy
DCA (Dollar-Cost Averaging) isn't just buying regularly. It's the art of building positions in any market condition.
Optimal DCA Parameters
Purchase Interval
Daily:
- ✅ Portfolio stability
- ✅ Low fees on frequent small orders
- ❌ Requires sufficient account balance
Weekly:
- ✅ Balance between stability and flexibility
- ✅ See weekly cycles
- ✅ Recommended for beginners
Monthly:
- ✅ Simple monitoring
- ❌ May miss monthly opportunities
Investment Size
Formula: your monthly budget ÷ 4 weeks (or ÷ 30 days)
Examples:
- Budget $500/month → $125 per week
- Budget $1,000/month → $50 per day
Important: don't invest more than you can afford to lose in worst case.
Avoiding Typical Mistakes
Mistake 1: Stopping When Price Falls
❌ Wrong: price fell 20%, I panic and stop the bot ✅ Right: price fell 20%, my bot buys even more for the same money!
DCA works better during drops — when you get maximum coins.
Mistake 2: Switching Pairs
❌ Wrong: first buying Bitcoin, then switching to Ethereum ✅ Right: choose one proven pair and buy it for 3–6 months
Mistake 3: Taking Profits Too Early
❌ Wrong: position up 30%, I sell everything ✅ Right: let it grow, sell profit when up 100%+
Filters for DCA
Pure DCA always buys. But you can add filters:
No Filters (Classic DCA)
- Buys every day without conditions
- Best long-term results
RSI Filter
- Buy if RSI < 30 (oversold)
- Skip purchases at peaks
- Slows accumulation but improves entry
EMA Filter
- Buy if price > EMA(200) (uptrend)
- Participate only in uptrends
- Skip many downtrends
Tip: start without filters, add after 3 months experience.
Real Example: 6 Months DCA
You invest $100 weekly in BTC (starting at $40,000):
| Month | Price | Quantity | Investment | Position |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $40k | 0.01 | $400 | $400 |
| 2 | $35k | 0.0114 | $400 | $785 |
| 3 | $38k | 0.0105 | $400 | $1,133 |
| 4 | $42k | 0.0095 | $400 | $1,528 |
| 5 | $45k | 0.0089 | $400 | $1,893 |
| 6 | $48k | 0.0083 | $400 | $2,272 |
Result: spent $2,400, have $2,272 value. And this with a 13% dip! On uptrend would be +50%.
Best Pairs for DCA
🥇 First Choice
- Bitcoin (BTC) — most stable long-term
- Ethereum (ETH) — second most reliable
🥈 Second Choice
- XRP, SOL, LINK — proven assets
❌ Avoid
- Meme coins (DOGE, SHIB)
- Coins < 1 year old
- Low-volume coins
When to Stop DCA?
Stop when:
- Reached target position (e.g., 1 BTC)
- Want to lock profits (position up 100%+)
- Lost confidence in exchange or asset
DON'T stop just because market fell. That's when DCA gives maximum results.
